Pencil Box Film Review

Introduction –

The title of this short film Pencil Box may seem inappropriate and ambiguous but we have a strong feeling that it is has been picked up for a strong reason or reasons. We have a few theories but the same cannot be discussed as it will reveal the crucial plot element. However, the film does revolve around a sensitive and a rarely talked about subject.

Synopsis –

Appu ( Aryan Randhawa ) is a young boy, living with his mother ( Taniya Thakur ), father ( Rupinder Jeet Mahesh ) and grandfather in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Things look great in the beginning – a family residing in a faraway small town / village, apparently happy and close-knit. However, we are soon introduced to the conflict. Appu’s class is going for a picnic to the nearby park. It sparks a debate between him and his best friend and later with his parents.

Although Appu is keen to join his class and enjoy the trip, especially with his best friend, his parents refuse permission. The family tries to pacify young Appu, bribing him with assorted, lucrative options but Appu remains adamant. Exasperated Appu’s mother slaps him. The picnic event is quickly forgotten but another incidence raises its ugly head. This time the struggle is even more menacing than the first one. Watch Pencil Box to know why Appu’s parents stop him going to the picnic, and what is the subsequent conflict which threatens to break up the family forever?

Analysis –

Director Amit Sanouria has maintained a fine balance between creativity and subtlety, and the result – a film which is conformist’s delight and easy to watch / enjoy. Lighting, shot composition and camera technique also adhere to the basics which is what the script demands. Performances by all the actors are inspiring, especially Aryan Randhawa and Taniya Thakur. The mother-son bond has always been emotionally profound and this feeling is beautifully reflected on the screen. We’d also like to congratulate Gurjeet Deol for his standout act.
