Anupam Kher’s Kheer – Not Sweet

Introduction –

Kheer is a sweet story about old age romance. This subject has been popular in the West for a long time and now the cinema enthusiasts in India too have begun to accept and appreciate this genre.

Synopsis –

The film begins with Natasha Rastogi dusting a sideboard and its contents. She scolds Anupam Kher for his callous attitude towards cleanliness. On the other hand he retaliates by saying that she is a lousy singer. It is obvious that they both love this verbal duel. They also seem quite happy in each other’s company.

It is at this point in time Anupam Kher hears a knock. He opens the door. Two kids ( a girl around 10 years old, and a boy around 8 years old ) look up at him. Anupam tells them with a pinch of humor that it is not Sunday. The kids say that the house belongs to their Nanoo and then dash inside. They are intrigued by Natasha’s presence who smiles at them. Before they can question him ( Anupam Kher ), Natasha smells the air and then warns Anupam Kher that the Kheer must have been charred by now.

Anupam Kher races inside the kitchen. His granddaughter follows him. She questions her Nanoo if Natasha was his girlfriend and if he planned to replace Nani ( She is dead ). She also asks him if her favorite dish, the Kheer is being prepared for Natasha. Anupam Kher scolds her for the ridiculous and outrageous questions. The girl walks out of the kitchen silently and sits on the verandah steps.

Childish end – a damp squib

A little later, Anupam Kher walks into the living carrying a couple of bowls of Kheer. He offers one to Natasha and the other to his grandson who is playing Snakes and Ladder with her. Natasha asks Anupam Kher if he scolded his granddaughter. He admits that he did reprimand her. Natasha says it’s not done and he has to win back her heart. Anupam Kher joins his granddaughter on the steps and says that he makes Kheer every day and not for Natasha.

Analysis –

Apart from Anupam Kher’s presence the film has nothing to rave about. The script is shallow while the story fails to convey the message ( about old age romance ), if there was one in the first place. The performances of all the actors, including Anupam Kher is ordinary.
