Sepia Short Film Review

Introduction –

The term Sepia is synonymous with old, black and white photographs which sometimes reflect reddish brown tinge caused by extended, enclosed storage and chemical reaction. An heirloom item, these monochrome photographs are often preserved and cherished for generations.

In Sepia, one old photograph changes the course of two young individuals who are about to walk their separate paths. It is a typical modern love story where the couple is weighed down by their selfish beliefs, rationales and goals.

Best Dialog by Aparshakti Khurana – I don’t need a sign to let us know that we need to be together, I want us to be together.

Synopsis –

Ruhaann Saddana ( Aparshakti Khurana ) is a popular actor. He is caring, handsome and madly in love with Kaavya Prabhakar ( Sapna Pabbi ), a self-made woman who runs a digital magazine called “Her”, aimed at women’s empowerment. Like any other couple even Ruh and Kaav have their differences, their individual desires which results in frequent verbal fights. While Ruh is fanatic about stars, sun-sign and the power of “Perfect Name” Kaav it seems is a sucker for intellectual chats.

COUPLE TROUBLE

Their troubles intensify the day Ruh is nominated for the best actor. Kaav says she has an urgent video interview with Reuters and therefore cannot accompany him to the awards ceremony. Although Ruh is unhappy and even argues, he finally agrees to go solo. Later, he calls up Kaav and tells her that another actor beat him to it. He asks Kaav to pick him up as he is completely shattered. Back home a group of friends are waiting for them. They have been invited by Ruh to cheer Kaav because they’d fought earlier.

However, things go out of hand after the guests leave. Accusations and allegations intensify till Kaav decides to break up with Ruh. But then a miracle happens in the morning. Kaav finds an old family photograph, the one shot right in front of Taj Mahal. She peers at it closely which results in an expression of shock…

…watch Sepia to know Kaav’s and Ruh’s fate and the significance of the photograph.

Analysis –

First the chafes – The script is badly written. There are scenes which feel forced and childish. Why would a successful actor crib about paying petty restaurant bills? What kind of a man asks his fiancé to go Dutch? Kaav’s infatuation for intelligent guys is baffling … really? Then why did she get into the relationship in the first place. Just because someone is an Astro-Physcist doesn’t mean he is Stephen Hawking.

What makes this film special is the title, the old photograph and Aparshakti’s performance. In fact, we frequently saw glimpses of Ayushmaan in him. Shot compositions are good, direction impressive and some of the camera techniques, specially the early morning scenes were truly amazing.
