Bestseller Web Series Review

Introduction –

Bestseller is a psychological thriller, about a celebrity author Tahir Wazir ( Arjan Bajwa ) badly in need of a story / plot for his new book. The pressure is building as he needs to deliver the manuscript to his publisher.

Synopsis –

Tahir is cornered from all sides. He is stuck in a troubled relationship with his wife Mayanka Kapoor ( Gauhar Khan ) who runs an ad agency, his own shortcomings including writer’s block from which he is unable to break free and frequent reminders from his commissioning agent / book editor ( Suchitra Pillai ) introduces quite a few challenges in his life.

And then the magic happens

A huge admirer of Tahir’s writing, Meetu Mathur ( Shruti Hasan ) enters his life. She says she too has a story to narrate and also confesses that she’s killed a man in the past ( she reveals this casually ). Intrigued by Meetu’s story and her personality Tahir hires her as his assistance. The idea is to exploit her story for his current commitment. At the same time Mayanka too hires an executive intern, Parth Acharya ( Satyajeet Dubey ) who is also an IT expert.

The moment Meetu enters his life Tahir is hounded by a mysterious person on social media. He threatens, challenges and promises to destroy Tahir’s life. True to his word this mysterious person attacks Meetu in such a way that ACP Lokesh Pramanik ( Mithun Chakraborty ) and even the media bare convinced Tahir is the culprit, the abuser. However, ACP Lokesh Pramanik realizes that Tahir is being framed. The identity of the person who attacks Meetu is revealed rather early which somehow dampens the interest. He is none other than Parth. But why is Parth out to sabotage Tahir’s career? And who is Meetu? Is she really a fan or someone who genuinely has a story which she wants to pen down?

Arjan Bajwa | Gauhar Khan | Shruti Hasan | Satyajeet Dubey | Mithun Chakraborty | Sonalee Kulkarni | Suchitra Pillai | Viraf Patell

Analysis –

A successful thriller film or a book consistently maintains the mystery by not revealing the identity of the mastermind. It is an element which is typically reserved for climax. However, Bestseller fails to adhere to this basic principle. Apart from revealing the identity of the person behind the threats, the film has quite a few plot holes too. What is more irritating is that the audience can easily fill in the blanks and conjure the plot within the first few episodes. It is so obvious. But a smart cop like Lokesh Pramanik fails to nail the culprit. Frankly, the last four episodes seem like filler for the climax, which as we mentioned is already obvious.

Unnecessary top shots which actually appear quite bizarre and overuse of low lights that may seem like a good idea for a thriller film, at least on paper, diluted actor’s facial expressions, a crucial element of any film belonging to this genre.

Apart from Gauhar Khan and Satyajeet Dubey, none of the actors made an impact on us. Arjan Bajwa was okay; Shruti Hasan tried her best but somehow failed to convince us with her “scared, stupid, simple” girl antics. Mithun Chakraborty irritated us most of the time with his ludicrous analogies and facial expressions, although his assistant ( Sonalee Kulkarni ) caught us off guard. She has the potential. Hope to see more of her in the future.
